Dating Online - Top Tips for Writing a Winning Profile

Internet dating is no longer seen as the kingdom of the sad and lonely, where all the left-on-the-shelf waifs and strays go to find love. Social networking sites have made dating online an acceptable, straightforward and often necessary option for people with busy lives. So why do so many people have trouble finding that perfect partner?

The two things that let prospective daters down are actually the most important aspects of their online profile:

A - their photo

B - what they write

Well, the photo part it easy - you upload one to your profile and, in some cases, crop or reposition it and hey presto! (I'm assuming you have one that's in focus, shows your actual face - as opposed to the back of your head - and is either a head and shoulders portrait or presents you standing reasonably close to the camera). The written part though, can be more problematic.

If you're not great with words, descriptions or if you're a bit short of ideas, try my top five tips for writing a winning profile:

1. Take inspiration. Have a look at what other members have written. What sort of impression do they give? Do they make the writer sound positive? Are they overly enthusiastic? Are there any spelling or grammatical mistakes? Do they sound like a hundred other profiles? Make a note of anything you think might be useful - words, phrases, topics.

2. Don't write it online. I know what you're thinking - "but hey, I'm already online, only minutes away from browsing through photos of thousands of possible partners and all I have to do is add a few lines to describe myself. I'll just scribble down some ideas and I'm all set, right?" NO! Here's what you do: log off the dating site, think about what you want to say and allow yourself the time to do it properly. Then open a Word document, or grab a pen and paper and start writing.

3. Be positive. Make two lists. The first one should be about you, listing all the things you feel are positive in your life, that motivate you, get you excited, enthusiastic, fascinate you or get you thinking. Also, consider what you want out of life, where are you going? What are your plans? (It's okay if you don't have any.) The second list must describe what you're looking for. It may be that it's pretty much a reflection of your first list, and that's okay.

3. Tell the truth. Don't invent a whole new life for yourself just to sound interesting. Never lie about your age, height or anything else that will be perfectly obvious to a prospective partner when he/she turns up for that first date.

4. Use language. If the written word isn't one of your strong points, you can always get a little help. You might find you've used the same word several times in your writing. If so, grab a thesaurus, or if you're on a computer, do a right click on the word for synonyms (words or phrases that mean the same, or similar). You can also browse the Internet for ideas around your particular passions, so instead of saying "I'm interested in old movies", you might say "I'm fascinated by classic cinema of the 1940's". This isn't a lie, but it does make you sound a little more culturally aware, and that gives you an advantage.

5. Who am I? When you've got something near to a finished profile, try and put yourself in the position of the kind of person you're looking for. What would that person get from your summary? How do you come across? And most importantly, is this the sort of profile that would make you think "Hey, this person sounds really appealing".

Don't forget to check spelling etc, and finally, if you have a friend who you know will offer an honest opinion, ask them to read your work before you put it out there for the rest of the world to see.

Online Tips For a Woman's Dating Profile

Dating has taken on a whole new form with the creation of online dating. There are numerous amounts of websites designed to help people find love. When creating a profile on one of these websites it is easy to get lost in the shuffle if the profile does not stand out above the rest.

1. The Heading

The heading is the first line that someone will see when they look through a list of profiles. Generic and uninteresting headings often get overlooked by the seeker. This is an area that needs to catch their attention. Try writing a headline that incorporates inner self into it with a touch of humor.

2. About Me

The about me area of the dating profile is the place to shine. Long profiles will send many people back to the search page. Small snippets of who you are and what your interests are will keep them on your page. Try to incorporate as much of yourself into a simple paragraph without bragging. This Is also the place to list your hobbies, interests and maybe even future goals.

3. Keep It Light

Negativity will only breed more negativity. If this is the type of person that you are looking for, then write it. If you prefer a lighter hearted person to date, then keep the profile light hearted. Stay positive throughout it. Instead of stating the numerous attempts you tried at finding Mr. Right without any success, try a simple approach of just. Saying "Mr. Right, where are you?" is light, to the point, with a touch of humor.

4. A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

The picture posted on any dating profile should be clear enough for the seeker to make out every detail. This is the first glimpse that the seeker will have of you and every detail counts. Make sure that the eyes are very clear in the picture, clear enough that the true color of them show. The picture should also be very recent.

5. Honesty

Every detail listed in an online dating profile should be honest. This includes exact details about your age, body type and height. The purpose of a dating profile is so that you can meet the right person and when they see you are nothing like you posted, there will not be another date.

Online Dating Profile Creation

Spending time creating a strong profile is arguably the most important factor in determining your success or failure when it comes to internet dating. If you get it wrong, nobody will contact you, and your money will be wasted, it's as simple as that. Get it right, and you should have plenty of people contacting you. It can easily take several hours creating the perfect profile, so don't expect to knock it out in 5 minutes, unless you are indeed an extremely gifted copywriter!

The first mistake a lot of people make is to lie about themselves. If you were to meet someone face to face and told them a pack of lies to get them into bed (many of us have to admit to doing this at some stage...), how long do you expect the relationship to last? Usually a few weeks from my experience! Of course sometimes this is the idea and who cares, but if you are looking for a meaningful long term romance, perhaps you should apply a little thought and be as open and honest as you would hope your prospective partner to be.

Here are some tips for you to incorporate when putting together your profile - it is after all, basically an advertisement for yourself:

- Definitely include a photograph - a recent one at that - face shot and body (clothed!) is generally the rule. The majority of searchers will exclude adverts without a photo, so it is essential.

- As above, profiles with photos are proven to be up to 10 times more effective in terms of "click through". Try and come across as confident and strong in your shots.

- Make sure your profile stands out. Write a catchy title for your profile - something witty and intelligent, which sticks out from the rest. If you write something mundane and formulaic, how many responses do you think you will get from genuinely interesting people? Be original and have fun.

- Spend hours on compiling your profile - do not write too much otherwise you will come across as a poor communicator. By the same token, a few lines is not going to interest anyone sincere. Put in your interests, desires, hopes and dreams, both in terms of love and life. The last thing you want is finding the perfect match love wise, and then you find out their ambition is to live in japan for 5 years to teach English as a foreign language, when all you desire is the security of your family and friends!

- Read over your profile several times (even ask a friend for an extra eye), and make sure you give it the once over with a spell checker - poorly written and badly constructed sentences, together with spelling mistakes show lack of care, thought, and education.

- If you are finding that your profile is getting you nowhere, change it! Get friends and family (if you are not too embarrassed) to give it a once over to give constructive criticism.

Finally, a lot of dating sites offer a "Professional Profile Writing Service" - if you are having a tough time either writing one, or not getting the results, give them a try - it's in their interests to make you as marketable as possible, so take them up on the offer.

Good luck finding love online!

Your Dating Profile - How To Present Yourself Online

For many people, the hardest part of starting to date online is figuring out what to put in their profile. All dating sites offer their members a profile page, where each member can write about his or herself, upload a photo (or several) etc. What you write about yourself in the profile is extremely important: second only to the picture in terms of making other members aware of who you are and making them want to contact you.

Many people are keen to start searching for and contacting people as soon as they join a site. As a result, they either leave their profile blank, or write something quickly before beginning their search. This is OK if you're just having a look around, but if you are serious about finding love online, you should take some time and make sure your profile is a good reflection of who you are. After all, it's what makes you stand out from the rest of the people on the site.

Here are a few points to keep in mind:

Not too long, not too short

Try to write a profile that is detailed enough to tell people about you, but short enough to leave people wanting more. Writing a full length essay is a waste of time as most people wouldn't bother reading it all. If someone did read it through and contacted you, you probably wouldn't have anything left to talk about!

Be yourself

It's easy to lie when writing a profile, but more difficult to follow through once you meet someone. If your profile says you're 6'4" when you're really 5'11", your cover will be blown as soon as you turn up for your date. Also, starting a relationship with a lie is a sure way to get off to a bad start.

Unfortunately, even people who are honest and well-meaning sometimes lie unintentionally in their profile, by trying to write it in a way that they think would make them more attractive to other people. If you want to attract a likeminded person, you have to be honest about who you are, your hobbies and interests etc.

Don't be too demanding

Many people use their profiles to list the qualities they would like their ideal match to have. There is nothing wrong with that, but make sure you balance this with information about yourself. You don't want to come across as writing a ransom note.

Too much information

Avoid mentioning past disappointments and bad break-ups in your profile; this is not what the space is for. Think: do you really want this to be the first thing people see when they look you up? Don't let yourself be defined by negative aspects of your personality and bad experiences of the past.

Make it funny

Using humour is a good way to liven up a profile and give people a glimpse into your personality. Some of the most successful profiles are the ones that simply make people laugh. Including a joke you find funny is good, as long as you make sure you write something about yourself in the profile as well.

Be original

Anyone can write "I have a good sense of humour", but not anyone could make you laugh. When writing about yourself, don't just use a list of adjectives. Try to go deeper and give people examples of what you actually mean. A good way of doing this is starting off with a list of adjectives and then using each one as a starting point for a few lines of text.

Upload a picture

Even the least shallow people want to know who they're talking to. Not having a photo on your profile will make many people ignore you completely. Some people even specify in their search that they only want to speak to people whose picture appears on the site. Don't worry about your looks. Different people have different tastes and not everyone expects to meet a movie star or a supermodel online. A clear headshot of you smiling is all it takes to seriously increase the amount of responses you get.

Be consistent

Make sure your profile, your screen name and your picture all match the impression you want to give. If you are a woman looking for a serious relationship, calling yourself "SexKitten" and uploading a semi-nude picture of yourself, is not likely to attract the kind of man you're looking for. A man looking for a wife, should probably not use a username that hints about how good he is in bed.

Remember: your profile is the first (and often last) impression you will make to potential online matches. Make it count.

3 Keys to Creating a Profile That Attracts the Dates You Really Want

I'll admit it. There was a time not so long ago where I thought the whole online dating thing was a waste of time. But I discovered a secret that took me from sitting in my house watching movies alone to being the Dating Site Maven with 4 dates a week!

This is the story of how that happened and how you, too can skip the painful experimentation stage and move on to the more fun stage - getting offline and out dating.

At the age of 50, I went from being engaged to be married (no easy task at any age) to being suddenly single. I soon discovered that chance meetings in book stores and coffee shops were a thing of the past. After enduring several unsuitable dates arranged by well meaning friends, I mustered up the courage to try online dating.

I admittedly entered this genre screaming and kicking; subconsciously sabotaging my efforts at every turn with disastrous results. I did all the usual "dating prep work": stylish hair cut, nice clothes, updated make-up, brightening teeth etc, but because I truly did not want to travel down this road at this point in my life, my attempt was half hearted - and that never works.

A depressed friend shot the first round of photos, while discouraging me about my chances for success. (ouch) In retrospect, the pictures were sad, uninviting and desolate, like the ones taken in a pinch with a cell phone camera. My first vague attempt at a profile wasn't much better. It was just plain boring. I was clear about what I didn't want, yet did little to invite prospective dates in to my world.

For the next year or so my profile netted nothing more than a couple of coffee dates. And so like so many others, I declared "it just doesn't work" and "it's nothing more than a waste of time." I had entered the "being stuck in cyberspace dating doldrums" phase.

So I "gave up for good" and vowed never to revisit this path - until I met several upbeat 50+ women, with online dating success stories. Hmmm. What were they doing that I wasn't? And so I entered phase two with a serious attitude adjustment.

I decided to use my background in marketing and business to give my profile page a "makeover." How would I market me? I made a one to two year commitment to the business of "finding love." I would create my own "brand" and "marketing campaign."

First and foremost I needed new pictures - new professional photographs.

Tip no. One - get great professional photos that look like you do NOW. You may think that this is expensive. Maybe, but there are some strategies you can use to help manage the cost. Look around and you may find plenty of creative types willing to trade services for great pictures. Perhaps you could trade marketing or advertising expertise for photos. Think outside the box and make your needs known, as I did. The photographer you select needs to be highly creative with the ability to capture your different moods; some playful, serious, sexy, contemplative, spunky and confident. Think of the some of the great photographs you've admired which transfixed not only the image, but displayed the essence of the personality and spirit. That needs to be your goal for the photo shoot, so don't be shy and don't settle for less.

Then I got a new wardrobe and had the photographer focus just on me.

Tip no. 2 Keep it Simple. I used only two sets of clothes; one dressy and another nice casual, which worked out fine. Here's the most important part to remember: on-line dating pictures are only about you and no one else. I know, you want people to think that you are dating online "by accident," so maybe your photo page is filled with pictures of your children/grandkids/pets/art etc. Mistake! And trust me, people looking at your profile don't' care about your trip to the Grand Canyon, Hawaii, India or Tibet. Why? They don't know you - yet. Frankly it is too much information for strangers in cyberspace.

I used my marketing background to describe myself, without pretending to be someone I am not.

Tip no. 3: Be truthful, consistent and avoid being too general. Spend some time thinking about your subject line for your online profile. It should be a bit catchy but not too provocative. The same is true for the narrative within your profile. You wouldn't just throw together the first thing that comes to your mind in a business proposal, so use the same strategy for your profile.

Don't change your profile too many times or people may wonder what you're up to - or even if you're the same person - which can be a little weird.

Be specific about what you are looking for and what you have to offer. Nearly everyone likes sunsets and beaches, so use descriptive words and specific destinations that might pique some interest. And PLEASE be honest about your age. This is one of the most common complaints about on line dating.

Finally don't rush the process. If you are recently out of a long term committed relationship or widowed, it make take a long time - and that's OK. Remember the process is about you, so put your best foot forward and take the leap. You may be surprised to find there are others in the same position who also seek a meaningful connection.

Today, I enjoy as many as 4 dates per week, all because I looked at myself and my profile differently. If your dating site profile is attracting "all the wrong people" consider getting someone to play neutral third party, like I do for my clients every day. Soon you'll attract the dates you're really looking for and maybe someday soon, you'll find "the one."

To your online dating success,

Christine

Online Dating Sites - Tips On Writing Your Profile

Writing your online dating site profiles are really your chance to excel and sell yourself to an exciting market of online singles. This is where your uniqueness must come through to the forefront to express you in the best way possible. Writing your online dating site profile is best done creatively with conveying a genuine message about yourself. Write about your passions. Then you are likely to attract the best singles. Here are some things to keep in mind when writing your online dating site profile to improve your interest:

1. Smile and post a clear picture!

Pictures speak a thousand words. Here is where you really get to sell yourself. Your smile will attract the best person. Having the best online dating site profile picture will provide you instant attention. Each click to your profile begins the screening process for meeting the right person, just as plenty of people walk right past a donut shop, once someone enters the shop they have made the choice to give it more of their attention. It is a good idea to have more than one photo, giving a well rounded likeness of who you are.

Statistically speaking, profile pictures will attract more than 12 times the activity of profiles without them. Be sure your pictures look exactly like you. Obviously posting high school photos if you are 45 is not a very wise idea. Be sure there is enough light to show you sharply, but not over-exposed. Have a warm smile - This brings out the best in you. Practise smiling in front of a mirror. Often people don't like their own smile, but we all have a view of ourselves quite differently than someone else does. Have you ever seen someone who's good looking and they are smiling? It gives you that warm feeling of attraction. This is your goal.

2. Creating A Stunning Head-line:

Your headline should be concise and straight forward. Here the essential goal is to attract the right person. This posture you to give a picture of exactly who you are, so other people can determine if they want to read more about you. Important: Capitalise The Initial Letter Of Words In Headlines To Emphasize Them! Market research finds that word capitalization has a large impact on reader attention. Consider the type of person you would like to attract. It may be difficult, but think of a line which describes your passion, with some humour. For example:

"Crazy Skydiver Wants Partner For Sky Adventures"

Maybe perhaps that's an extreme example, but I think you see. Here are some further ideas to get you creative:

"Movie Watcher Seeks Equally Productive Couch Potato To Wine, Dine & Eat Popcorn Together"

"Keen Horse Rider Looks For Knight For Riding Adventures In the Sunset"

"Accountant Calculating the Best Probability To Date You"

"Plumber Pipedreams Meeting You Today"

"Receptionist Looking For Handsome Single Men Today - You'll Have A Warm Reception!"

"Painter Wanting To Find An Assistant To Paint My Home"

Get creative with humour if you can

3. Writing about yourself in your own text

Text fields are an important area for you to shine. The more info you put in your online dating site profile the better the chance the right person will find you interesting and contact you. It is an excellent idea to add things you love and things you don't love in these fields. If there is an actor you don't like or you absolutely like, add them. If you enjoy travelling the world or don't like travelling, include this too. All of this info makes you who you are.

4. Be specific with what you say

Writing your online dating site profile you are best to be straight to the point with enough information. A lot of profiles have information like "I like watching movies, quiet nights at home, going out sometimes, weekends away... " How would someone differentiate you from one person to the next? Being too general is the easiest mistake to make and will not highlight you enough. Be specific. What was your favourite movie experience? Why? Was it the actor or singer? Was it what they said or did? Where do you like to go out? To dinner? If so, where, why, and when? You don't like spicy food? What is your favourite weekend away spot?...

5. Write your online dating site profile with the best grammar, and be articulate.

Write professionally. You are on display to many other people. Trying to add slang or funny pick up lines don't always work, unless you have a natural flair for comedy. Most people would like to see the plain you.

6. Be truthful about yourself

Writing your online dating site profile honestly is the easiest thing to remember and the best and right thing to do. If you don't like anchovies, don't eat pizza with them on top just because your partner wants to order it. Let them know. Likewise, when you read someone else's profile yourself, you hope they're saying who they really are and what they do. Honesty is best.

7. Say what you do or don't like

It makes online dating sites much more enjoyable if you email someone who you are most certainly going to be a good match with... Not just anyone to meet you. Why does someone want to have a meeting with you? - It isn't about looks, the best job or being rich that is important to most people. It is about discovering exciting genuine matches with the best probability of finding love

8. Check your online dating site profile carefully - Use spell checkers if you need to.

When writing your online dating site profile your educational ability is on display. Your profile will then look tops and show you put a good amount of effort in.

9. Write your online dating site profile with your goals close at hand - What exactly do you seek in someone else? - Get straight to the point.

Searching people for the "right one" is difficult enough. As a visitor to someone's profile you want to know straight away what people are all about. Are they looking for long term relationships, short term relationships or just a friendship? Consider your own info and be sure it really lines up with what you really want to find in someone else.

Writing your online dating site profile is the best and most exciting way to meet others. Perfecting your profile is one of the most important keys to attracting the right person.

Online Dating Profile Revisions - Tough Love For the Ladies

When you're after a different outcome, more of the same will not get you what you want. It seems like a blinding flash of the obvious. As a man who has reviewed a lot of women's profiles, the difference between success and failure in online dating/meeting is in the profile. If no one is emailing you (or they're ignoring yours, when you email them)...you're getting nowhere fast. It's time to do something different. There's usually a reason you're not getting responses and the chances are, it's your profile. The first question I would ask is, "Are you targeting your communication to men?" Seems pretty basic and straightforward. But it never ceases to amaze me how many women write as though they were writing to other women.

Which brings me to my first observation about your profile. If you've finished your profile but haven't run it past a guy to ask him if HE likes it... then you're really not finished writing your profile. If you don't have a "guy mentor" yet, get one! I know, I know. You're much more comfortable asking women for advice. Get over it. It isn't that the women you know who aren't sympathetic to your cause, or don't have information that's relevant. They do. It's just that their perspective won't be particularly helpful, if your audience is guys.

Suppose you could talk to your cat and your dog...and they could answer you in a way you could understand. If your dog wasn't eating well, but you were uncomfortable talking to the dog about his/her problem, would you ask the cat why the dog wasn't eating? Probably not. Because you recognize that while they have a lot in common, they're not the same. Even if they get along really well, they're still anatomically and psychologically different. Same with men and women. We all know this, but so many women who behave as though this was news when it comes to their profiles.

So what do you need to do to rev up your profile and improve your chances of achieving the desired outcome? Funny you should ask. I'm going to tell you. It's easier (and harder) than you think. Let's take a look at it from the perspective of men in the 21st Century. In order for you to get consistent responses based on your profile, men need to get favorable answers to the following questions; and pretty much in the order below.

1. Do I find you attractive? That's a convoluted question he won't be able to answer until you've met. But he'll have a good idea if you have several photos posted. (Not one; several...) Why several? Because just one photo suggests you went spelunking for the best you had and posted it...never mind how old it is. Post several; all different, all recent.

2. Will it "feel good" to be with you? (Most of the time.) If he's relationship-oriented, he really wants to know. In addition, if he has two brain cells to rub together, he also knows it won't always feel good. But he's okay with that if it does most of the time. You convey this in your profile essay. (The key here is to write enough...but not too much!)

3. Do I have what it takes to be "the one" as you are likely to define it? (His question to himself as he is reading your profile.) The answer lies in your essay and the factual portion of the profile, in the form of what you say you want. If he has doubts about his ability to measure up, he's likely to click next.

4. How badly do I want to find out if we might click? This is all about approachability. If you come across as demanding, difficult or disappointed, he'll probably opt out. He would prefer to feel that you're likely to be receptive. If he doesn't he may still try, but even the most confident will be out the if your profile doesn't make you "feel" approachable in taken as a whole. Oh and by the way...the guys who will answer, if your profile doesn't feel approachable are less likely to be the loving, supportive kind. Trust me on this one...

If the answers to one or more of these questions are unfavorable, he's probably clicking next. If the answers are all favorable, you're likely to have an email to answer, tomorrow. It's that simple. Don't let your own head or the "best advice" of your girlfriends over complicate this. The tough part is conveying the desired impression in a way that is accurate, attractive and short enough that it gets read. "Short enough" generally means a profile essay of about 16-20 lines, give or take. "I'm supposed to summarize who I am, what I want and why he should choose me in 20 lines?" you ask incredulously.

In a word...Yep! I said it was simple. I didn't say it would be easy. But if you're not getting answers to your emails or hits on your profile, look at the four elements I outlined above and then read your profile. Chances are you have overlooked one or more of the above...which is why you're not getting as many responses as you deserve. That's likely to be true, even if you're drop-dead, traffic-stopping gorgeous and all your photos make that very clear. It really is true, ladies. Keep the four questions above in mind and if it's not working for you now, consider revising your profile. Remember that more of the same won't get you more of what you want!

Finding Love Online - Tips on How to Set Up the Perfect Membership Profile

With top dating sites advertising that they get as many as 20,000 new members a day, it seems that finding love in line should be an easy thing to do. The best online dating sites can and do work for many people but one of the major things that can affect your success is how well you set up your dating profile. Here are the top tips to ensure your success when setting up your profile on internet dating sites.

1. Honesty is the best policy. Blatantly exaggerating (lying) on your member profile is against any reputable on line dating services' terms and conditions, and for good reason. If you can't trust everyone's profile information then you are wasting everyone's time and money. Also, just like cheating on a diet, the person you hurt most by not being honest is yourself. While lying is an obvious non negotiable, "stretching the truth" is also being dishonest. For example, how out dated exactly is the profile photo you posted? Were you 30 lbs lighter or with significantly fewer wrinkles or more hair than you have right now?

2. Quality of your profile photo. On the subject of dating profile photos, make sure your photo is a good quality, in focus picture. It should not be a "group" shot, unless you want to give the impression that you will be bringing all of your buddies on dates with you. Most on line dating services suggest both a head shot and a full body shot. Please, no professional "glamor" shots, ladies. Are you really going to be showing up on a date like you are heading off for a model photo shoot? Also, make sure you don't automatically send the wrong message to people by being either too scantily dressed or blatantly in "party" mode. For example, don't have a photo of you holding a cocktail the size of a goldfish bowl.

3. Spend time on the "free response" part of the dating profile. Many dating sites have new members complete questionnaires to help them "match" people of similar interests and dating goals. Above and beyond this, many multiple choice questions can revolve around how you react in certain scenarios or your preferences about different things. Because the multiple choice format usually only provides for 3 or 4 choices, often member profiles might seem like only slightly different versions of the same few "generic" people. Take full advantage of any opportunity to write a "free response" part of the profile to differentiate yourself from others. This needn't be more than one or two paragraphs about you and what you hope to find in a mate, but it will definitely increase your chances of finding love on line.

4. Take your time. Invest time in filling out your on line dating profile profile. Don't rush through. First impressions are important, and bad spelling and poor grammar do not lend themselves to a positive first impression.

Following these simple tips should ensure that you get the most out of your experience using an on line dating service. Thousands of people have found their soul mate on line and whether your goal is to do some casual dating or to meet your life partner, using an internet dating site could be an excellent option for you. The best services offer guarantees, so there is nothing to lose!
